Dr. Todd Maderis is an ISEAI Board Director and Naturopathic Physician. He is the founder and owner of Marin Natural Medicine Clinic, where he and his team help patients find optimal health through their comprehensive care, innovative therapies and integrated expertise. What is your primary field of work and where are you located?
My practice is Marin Natural Medicine Clinic. We are in Marin County, across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco. I consult with patients remotely via telemedicine.
What are your specialties and unique perspectives on environmental health?
I specialize in treating Lyme disease and associated infections, chronic viral infections, and mold illness, as well as secondary effects such as mast cell activation syndrome. After focusing on treating tickborne infections, I was introduced to mold illness in 2013, which changed how I approach chronically ill patients. In addition to directly damaging organ system function, mold suppresses the immune response allowing infections to reactivate.
In the past few decades, more research has emerged associating the role environmental toxicant exposure has on human health. Autoimmune conditions, cancer, and neurodegenerative conditions have risen significantly, and that, in part, may be due to humans’ increased exposure to environmental toxins. Physicians rarely look beyond the room they are sitting in with the patient when attempting to make a diagnosis. It is very rewarding to identify an environmental cause of a person’s symptoms. Sometimes other family members’ health improves because of that finding.

How did you get into your field of expertise and what led you into the realm of EAI?
I have always been interested in the intersection between human and environmental health. I trained with environmental medicine leader Dr. Walter Crinnion early in my career, which helped me establish an appreciation for seeking the root cause of illness. Then I became very interested in tickborne infections and, soon after, mold illness.
People with symptoms or conditions caused by environmentally-acquired exposures tend to fall through the cracks of conventional medicine. These are multi-systemic, multi-symptomatic conditions, and conventional doctors are not trained to diagnose or treat complex chronic illness.
What are one or two of your biggest EAI “aha” moments?
There have been many over the years, but the most rewarding is when we discover something in the patient’s environment, like mold, is the cause of their illness. I have treated patients who were diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, and it turned out that toxicity from mold exposure was the cause of their neuroinflammatory condition.

What would you like the public and other ISEAI members to know?
For people experiencing a myriad of chronic health symptoms such as fatigue, chronic pain, brain fog, headaches, anxiety, digestive symptoms, and more, continue to look for the underlying cause(s) of the symptoms. Find a physician who has invested time in understanding the complexities of chronic illness. You can get better!
For ISEAI members, stay curious and open-minded about treating complex chronic illnesses. There is much to learn. Also, generously share your experience and observations with your colleagues. Other physicians may be able to help their patients through your knowledge.
